It’s about as American as a sporting event can get, and it carries plenty of history: the Heavyweight Championship of the World at Madison Square Garden.
In the “Fight of the Century,” Muhammad Ali v Joe Frazier went down at the Garden in 1971.
James “Cinderella Man” Braddock took down madman Max Baer for the heavyweight title at the original MSG in 1935.
Now we can look forward to the next bout for greatness: This one is between Wladimir Klitschko and Bryant Jennings.
A political figure in the Ukraine and multiple championship belt-winner, Klitschko is the current world heavyweight champion. He’s nicknamed Dr. Steelhammer and — fun pop culture tidbit — he dates actress Hayden Panettiere. The challenger, Bryant Jennings, is an undefeated contender with 19 professional bouts under his belt. Jennings is generally perceived as a worthy opponent to the champ with the potential to take the belt. Considering their undisputed strength, both fighters should do the storied stage at Madison Square Garden.
In addition to hosting several great fights, the current iteration of Madison Square Garden has been a destination for athletic greatness in New York City since 1968. Currently home to the New York Knicks and Rangers franchises, this iconic landmark has also hosted a plethora of other cultural and athletic events. To step into Madison Square Garden is to step into history. What better way to do that than at a championship boxing match?
The Klitschko-Jennings fight is slated to take place this April. Given the resumes of the two pugilists and the historic venue where they’re slated to throw down, it promises to be an epic affair. Interested parties can purchase tickets of a wide variety, the most expensive of which is a VIP package including one ringside ticket, one Wladimir Klitschko-signed boxing glove and access to fight-week events. For regular seats and more information, be sure to visit the the Madison Square Garden website.
