When financially destitute Jackson Pollock and Willem DeKooning began selling their works in Washington Square park one day during the Great Depression, the two now legendary artists had no idea they were starting one of the city’s most revered arts events. The Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit, now held biannually, is one of the city’s premier recurring markets and shows, and displays works of fine art, photography, crafts, and sculpture. Its location in one of the city’s favorite parks at the beautiful end of summer make the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit a must-see.
