The flagship location of Macy’s department store — in Herald Square — will host its annual Flower Show for two weeks, running through this coming March and April. A spectacular visual event, the show will feature premier floral arrangements from around the city and design industry. The arrangements can be viewed in the store, and in the neighboring pedestrian plaza on Broadway. The history of this center-stage event is nearly as powerful as the venue at which it’s held.
The Macy’s location in Herald Square is a century-old registered National Historic Landmark. The store is famous around the world for its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade and elaborate holiday window displays. The store is a mainstay in New York City’s incomparably vast and varied shopping scene.
Joining the ranks of historic events associated with Macy’s throughout history, the Flower Show has held its own in years past. The 2014 show featured many larger-than-life creations that wowed shoppers and visitors. A female mannequin stood nearly as tall as the store’s lofted ceiling, decked out in a dreamlike dress of red roses draped to the floor. Canopies of garden sculptures and colorful dynamic flower collections adorned entryways to the store. Incredible Broadway Plaza chalk drawings of flowers stopped pedestrians in their tracks.
With so many impressive creations stemming from past events and the mystery of what’s coming up this year, all we can do is wait and be excited for the Macy’s Flower Show at Herald Square. The traveling spectacle also visits Philadelphia, Chicago, Minneapolis and San Francisco. The New York edition will span the end of March and early April, offering entertainment for shoppers and flower lovers alike.
