What better way to banish that New Year’s Eve hangover than with verse and food? On the first afternoon of the year, almost 200 of New York City’s best poets, artists and performers gather at St. Mark’s Church and, one after another, recite their work to a hall full of listeners. Readers this year include Philip Glass, Eileen Myles, Anne Waldman and Sade Murphy. All funds raised go towards paying writers for their work throughout the season. From their website: “As an event, [the Marathon] exaggerates what we want each reading during the season to do—to provide a site of collective agency, and create a communal and generative space for the audience and the poet to experience new work!”
An amazing cultural experience? Check. Good for a family? Check. Getting to sit still and chug water for a few hours? Check. For more information, check out the event website here.
