As one of the oldest and most historic cities in the United States, New York is one of the best places to celebrate Independence Day. With a fireworks display that is second to none, and a host of patriotic festivals, markets and establishments, NYC is where you want to be this July 4th. Here’s your guide to the Fourth of July in the Big Apple.
Start off your trip with a menu that would make any American proud at Soho stronghold The Dutch. With everything from bi-coastal oysters to flapjacks and legendary hot fried chicken, The Dutch will have you feeling all kinds of American spirit. Be sure to order the restaurant’s signature Bloody Mary cocktail, or better yet the Clamato-based Bloody Caesar.

Manhattan’s southernmost port, South Street Seaport, is transformed into a patriotic extravaganza during Fourth of July weekend. Vendors from the ever-popular Smorgasburg food festival along with an all-American-made market Northern Grade team up to deliver a one-of-a-kind Independence Day celebration.

A true American landmark, the historic James Brown House that Ear Inn calls home was built in 1770 for one of General George Washington’s aides during the Revolutionary War. NYC’s longest-serving bar, Ear Inn has been pouring cold ones from their West Side abode since 1817 and even operated as a speakeasy during prohibition. Known for its beer, bar bites and boisterous atmosphere, the Ear Inn is a must-try for history buffs and fun-seekers alike.

Nothing says Independence Day like a dazzling display of fireworks, and no one does it better than the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular. Lighting up the New York City skyline for the past 41 years, the show is an annual favorite for locals and tourists alike. The best place to watch the rockets stream high into the air above the city is from the FDR parkway on Manhattan’s East Side. The show usually starts around 9:30pm but make sure you arrive early to get a good viewing spot.
