It’s the 75th Anniversary of the American Ballet this year a perfect reason to attend the ballet this year! The fall season of the ballet is from October 22 until November 2nd at the David H. Koch Theater (20 Lincoln Center Plaza) in Lincoln Center. The American Ballet is without a doubt the preeminent ballet company in the U.S. (Congress even acknowledged this in 2006 and deemed the ABT “America’s National Ballet Company”. Famed artistic directors include Mikhail Baryshnikov who served as the artistic director from 1980 until 1989 and the current artistic director Kevin McKenzie, who’s known for his staggering creativity and has even choreographed his own versions of The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty.
To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the American Ballet the company is premiering several new productions. Liam Scarlett, the Royal Ballet’s first artist in residence, is choreographing a piece to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the dance company which will premiere on Wednesday October 22. Jardin Aux Lilas, tells the tale of a bride trapped in a marriage of convenience don’t miss the premiere on Thursday October 23 at 7:30 p.m.
The ABT isn’t merely for the seasoned dance pro’s. The American Ballet Theater has a ton of programs for young dancers as well as families! The ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School offers ballet students pre-professional training as well as a children’s division. The Young Dancer Summer Workshop is hosted at ballet studios around the country and offers young dancers between the ages of 9-11 a chance to hone their skills. If you want your son or daughter to gain a firsthand look into the theater take advantage of the ABTKids program. The ABTKids program offers ballet fun for the whole family. In this special 1 hour performance a member of the ABT narrates a performance with fun kid-friendly flair that your entire family can enjoy. For $150 the ABT offers children a VIP experience that includes 1 prime orchestra ticket, the opportunity to go on stage of the Metropolitan Opera House (!!) and a meet and greet with ABT dancers to name a few of the perks.
